A quick video showing some photos and giving some tips how to take advantage of the new camera features of the S21 Ultra. The S21 has introduced new Zoom lenses, and while this is a quick first test of the S21, it shows how I go about shooting and shows some real world examples of the camera in the phone.

I'm assuming you have Exynos version ? Amazing quality ! This settles it doesn't matter if you use the Exynos version or the Snapdragon version. Both capture amazing footage

    • Presc13nt
      Presc13nt

@Rob Mulally Yeah. Exynos does an amazing job. So no need to compare really. And the differences are really small, so if you don't know or put them side by side the difference is pretty negligible. I researched a lot before I made the purchase, so that's how I got down the rabbit hole haha I am very curious now though, how the Sony Xperia 1 III will compare, which will be announced in a few days :)

    • Rob Mulally
      Rob Mulally

@Presc13nt ahh Cheers! Yeah I might not want to watch them. Better not to know perhaps. Only time I've noticed overheating is when I left phone in the sun or did a test running 8k for a long time to see how long. Interesting that the image quality might be impacted as I just assumed that was more of a software/camera firmware thing rather than chipset. But I really don't know.

    • Presc13nt
      Presc13nt

@Rob Mulally They say the overall performance of the phone is worse on the Exynos. And also that it's overheating a lot. And they say camera performance is just overall better on the Snapdragon version. More sharpness. Less noise. I've read a lot of reviews. And watched a lot of reviews. And there's even a few videos from some 'big' youtubers, looking at the differences. But they are minor imo. Now I live in europe, so I have no choice but to go with the Exynos version. But it's interesting though. That said, I'm very happy with my S21 Ultra. And I think you're video makes it pretty clear that the Exynos version makes stunning pictures. Btw. Love your Insta page. @Rob Mulally interesting, if you haven't really noticied it, it must have improved from my note 10 plus. Waiting on s21 ultra to come. Shutter lag is bad on the note and often get blurry shots of moving objects

Sorry mate my s21ultra is very ordinary under low light.. nothing like your photos?.. as soon as I use 3x zoom it becomes blurry

  • Martin Griffiths
    Martin Griffiths

Ahh man! What a mixed bag the camera has turned out to be (for me). I have the 256GB Exynos, here's my findings on the photography front... In general I think it's fair to say this phone expands the shooting possibilities far beyond any other device I've had to date, which most recently include the S20 FE 5G, Pixel 4XL, Pixel 2XL. For me the choice of focal ranges is what i've been looking for and something I didn't ever expect to see in a package like this. I thought triple lens cameras would be the limit, so the S21 Ultra came as a surprise and I hoped mistakes made in the past generation would be ironed out. The hardware itself is definitely more than capable of handling a multitude of shooting scenarios but it is ultimately let down by the software that I VERY much doubt will be fixed, ever! My first impressions were of the sensor & lens choices themselves, all seem very capable, all include massively improved stabilization and autofocus capabilities and even the pixel sizes are promising particularly on the tele lenses. A clue to Samsung engineering decisions comes with the assumed improvement over to the 108MP pixel binning sensor compared to the S20 Ultra last year, but it serves far more than just taking photos in the wide setting. Samsung are clearly borrowing ideas from the AI kings at Google, but their implementation is weak and in many scenarios I have found using the cameras terribly frustrating. Overall, in brightly lit daytime shots indoors and outdoors with all lenses I cannot complain, but that's as long as you're pointing the camera at certain targets that are deemed ideal for the lens mode you are in! When I venture outside these ideal scenarios I'm ending up with unexpected and awful results. In medium and low light scenes my problem is exacerbated further through Samsungs smart choices that you have no control over whatsoever, giving me further disappointing results. So what am I banging on about here Well in a nutshell it's Samsungs focus assist mode. As an end user you only know it exists because you can selectively turn it off between the 0.6x UW and 1x W lenses when moving a subject much closer to the lens itself...But, you cannot turn it off between the 1x W, 3x tele and 10x tele lenses! In scenarios Sammy deem fit for telephoto shots, ie. extra long focal length scenes (generally) in good light the tele lenses are always picked at the set 3x and 10x magnifications. Pictures are often impressive but at times smoothing could be better and sometimes I get light haloing around objects, but still a big improvement on anything i've had before. It all goes terribly wrong when I bring my subjects much closer to the lenses in either the 3x or 10x tele modes. These lenses have great autofocus and are more than capable of handling this scenario, but what the software does (after a second or two) is pick the next sodding lens down and then upscale the flaming image! Some might say, that's my fault because I've pushed the ISO or shutter speed too much, but no, it's happening when there's more than enough light available to these lenses and even if it wasn't, night mode would overcome this in dark scenes anyhow! Which moves me onto the 108MP sensor, Sammy picked it not just for the 4x binning extra light crud. It also makes for a great cropping in option when deemed necessary, and you'd think the results would be comparable to the 3x tele, but sadly no, in almost every shot i've taken where it's used the 1x to crop in the results are still very disappointing compared to the optical lenses. Smoke and mirrors people, smoke and mirrors! Focus assist should be optional for ALL lenses and if you do turn it off, all it needs to do is warn you that a shot might not come out as well as you expected. Although to be blunt the results with it permanently on are terrible anyway! In fact I personally feel it shouldn't be doing what it's doing at all. Anyone who has ever held a camera and taken a photograph will know these things cannot work miracles, and Samsung are literally trying to trick you into thinking it can, with awful results! If you get the over processed, smushed images they are all coming from the lenses dropping down and upscaling or cropping in from the 108MP sensor. Utterly awful engineering decisions that make it all look seamless and magic but you more often that not get terrible photos.

    • Martin Griffiths
      Martin Griffiths

@Lachlan Scanlan what you're experiencing is the very shallow depth of field in the normal wide angle camera. The focus falls off too quickly and is a side effect of the large sensor being so close to a lens with a wide apperture. This wasn't a problem on 12mp sensors. I personally take more photos with the 1st telephoto lens than I do with any of the other lenses. It's only 20mm short of a 50mm prime and is almost as versatile. I don't understand why a 12mp 50mm @ f1.8 on a decent sensor hasn't ever been a mainstay on phones. The pixel 4xl had one but it was on a crap sensor and had an f stop of 2.4. So useless for portraits. All the software portrait nonsense could so easily be solved with a hardware solution. My problems with the s21u have been mostly around the software choosing lenses when you want it to stick to say the Tele. It's very frustrating but you can work around it if careful. Overall though i find the quality and versatility of the ultra exceeds the problems I have.

    • Lachlan Scanlan
      Lachlan Scanlan

Hi Martin. I had to scroll down all the way here to find someone who seems to have my problems, maybe. I'm not as technical as many here with cameras however I take a couple thousand plant photos (mostly close up) every year for my work last 8years or so and just upgraded from S10 to S21U. I use these cameras because I dont have time for higher tech gear and yet smart phones still produce very good shots. However with S21U I cannot do a single photo that I can use. Nowhere in any photo is there a place where you can say the image is not blurry. The images are actually painfaull to even look at, my eyes cannot land on a point where...anyhow long story. My son works with tech (robotics, cameras, code etc) showed me that the camera cannot properly process the images. It might be fixable with a software upgrade one day however i need my camera now for my work so its going back to the shop.

    • selenitafm
      selenitafm

@Rob Mulally Surely I expressed myself badly, apologies for my English. I was wondering about the quality of the screen when editing from the phone, I guess it will be in sRGB versus the PC screen, I don't know if the colors and lights that I see on the phone can be similar to editing on a pc.

    • Rob Mulally
      Rob Mulally

That depends what you are doing, where possible I like to just edit in lightroom, if i'm feeling artistic i might do more or if there is a fun creative idea there are some apps you can use to composite photos on the phone, so far I'm guessing it would be easier on the PC. if you know any good apps let me know i'm always looking for more.

I don't know what the issue is with mine, but all images seem low resolution. File size is 2.5mb to 3.5mb. Tried lots of options, but pics are awful. Not sure what's going on.

Every day use, not really, but that also gives you that 8k video and the low light performance at 12 mp so in that regard yes. It would suck to have 108mp and not be able to use it or be forced to use it so it's kind good that you get the choice.

Hi Rob, great video. Photography has been a hobby of mine for many years but I find the older I get the less inclined I am to carry my gear for long periods. I have the Canon 5D MKII which I will keep for local shooting and road trips. Fantastic review for photographers. I like to shoot time-lapse movies. Does this have that built in or do I need an app? For example, here is one of my view (in Ireland), shot on my old Galaxy S5: arcodes.info/to/fydyw/v8eIsNKabKPIadQ.html. I am eager to try this with the S21 Ultra's much better camera!

Coming from a galaxy S10, I was first sceptical to upgrade to the S21 Ultra seeing that the S20 Ultra was not as good as Samsung claimed during their S20 presentation back then and I was afraid this one wouldn'tbe any better. But since I could order the phone for halve of the retail price I just went ahead and pre-ordered it and man I'm glad I did! It's way better than expected. Camera is better such an improvement in comparison to my old S10, white balance, over exposure, soft selfies, night shot...all of that improved and I'm very happy Samsung has come this far with their camera technology addressing all the flaws from previous models. Have I mentioned how fantastic the screen and battery life are? Only thing I don't like is they got rid of the micro sd card storage and headphone jack. BTW I love this review, well done Sydney sider. G'day mate!

How would this compare to using a Mirrorless camera? The photo output on the S21U seems impressive, and am wondering if I made the right decision investing in the Sony A7iii recently?

    • Sudhir Gujar
      Sudhir Gujar

Hi Rob, I've got the FE 3.5-5.6 / 28-70 lens in the box. I'm getting used to them first, and shall add on in the future. However, S21U has truly been a game changer. I like the idea of them being complementary cameras, but that does run a risk of over-utilising the Samsung, considering it's robust specs.

    • Rob Mulally
      Rob Mulally

Rather than compare them think about how they can work as a team, Can you do a timelapse on one while the other does photos etc, what lens did you get on the A7iii ?

So how do you like it compared to other phones? This seemed to be next to a Samsund advertisement, but is it really that good?

Have you noticed the grainy issue when moving around while filming 4k video? I've seen a few reports of this and also portrait mode making subjects overly soft looking.

Agree, natural is the best screen color, especially when color grading photos.

A comprehensive video from an actual photographers point of view instead of tech reviews blowing smoke up its ass and not showing really what it can do. Thanks so much for me man. Knowing the different focal lengths in mm is a huge help too as you can choose what to use accordingly

this is the only video i've seen where the reviewer doesn't just point the phone at something and press the shutter button and call it a day.. people that spend £1200+ on a phone for it's cameras know how to take a good shot and use the lenses and software to its potential

1:29 Min this is a bit disappointing, 10x optical, no digital zooming and noisy as hell. While 10x Zoom is amazing, what about 7, 8 or 9x? This has to use the 3x lens with quite some digital zoom, do these photos turn out good?

    • Rob Mulally
      Rob Mulally

@widget787 Honestly I stick to the 3x and 10x and dont use the inbetween, as I know that going to be not a native zoom. But you are right I should experiment.

I've had a Canon T4i and now have a Canon m50 with 3 lens mostly use 50mm, a DJI Gimbal, my s8 is starting to wear out. Would you guys sell all the equipment to settle for a s21 ultra with a phone stabilizer for extra smoothness? I'm curious because I just feel like smartphones have caught up to Cameras now.

Great video man! Would love your help with a couple questions A) Amazing camera but I seem to struggle taking pictures on it of my kid.. Seems like if he even moves a tiny bit then the photo is blurry, don't seem to have that issue with my iphone.. Any recommendations? B) If you just want to take the best quality image would you use the pro mode or the 108mp option?

Huawei Mate 20 pro and Fuji XT20.Gave the Sony Xperia 5II an in depth 17 days trial, but returned it, as it was either a broken piece, or I could not get reasonable results without ND filters(which they do not offer for it).Never had such issues with the Huawei.
